Ultrasonography in Daily Dental Practice: From Diagnosis to Therapeutic Guidance

Home Ultrasonography in Daily Dental Practice: From Diagnosis to Therapeutic Guidance

Date & time: Thu, February 5, 2026 | 14:30 – 18:30
Venue: Radisson Blu Hotel, Riyadh Convention & Exhibition Center

Ultrasonography in Daily Dental Practice: From Diagnosis to Therapeutic Guidance

Session Description:

This workshop introduces dentists to the expanding role of ultrasonography in dental clinics, focusing on its utility in diagnosing salivary gland dysfunctions and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Additionally, the session highlights how ultrasound can guide minimally invasive procedures such as therapeutic injections to the masticatory and neck muscles and major salivary glands

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course the participants are able to:

  1. Understand the principles of ultrasonography and its advantages in the diagnosis of conditions affecting the orofacial region.
  2. Recognize the role of ultrasonography in evaluating salivary gland & TMJ pathology.
  3. Appreciate the use of ultrasound guidance in performing therapeutic procedures in the orofacial region.
  4. Perform basic ultrasonographic scans of the salivary glands and temporomandibular joint to identify anatomy and common pathologies.
  5. Demonstrate via video simulation for ultrasound-guided injection techniques for myofascial trigger points and botulinum toxin application in patients with hypersalivation.
  6. Integrate ultrasonographic assessment and intervention protocols into dental practice to improve patient management outcomes in orofacial disorders.

Course Program:

TIME TOPICS
09:00 – 09:10 Welcome & Introduction
09:10 – 09:55 Lecture 1: Salivary Glands Ultrasonography in Clinical Practices.

40-minute lecture followed by 5 minutes Qs & As

Synopsis:

This lecture will place emphasis on the advantages of real-time imaging for enhancing diagnostic accuracy and procedural safety of therapeutic interventions to the salivary glands while avoiding potential complications.

Speakers:

Konstantina Delli

09:55 – 10:20 Lecture 2: Temporomandibular Joint Ultrasonography in Clinical Practices.

20-minute lecture followed by 5 minutes Qs & As

Synopsis:

This lecture highlights the advantages of real-time imaging for enhancing diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic procedural safety to the TMJ region.

Speakers:

Jaisri Thoppay

10:20 – 10:30 Break
10:30 – 12:30 Hands-on Stations (120 minutes)

Session Description:

This interactive workshop provides dentists with hands-on training in the use of ultrasonography for clinical evaluation and intervention in orofacial disorders. Participants will practice ultrasound scanning techniques for assessing salivary glands and the TMJ, and learn, via simulation, ultrasound-guided methods for administering treatment for patients with myofascial pain and hypersalivation. The session is designed to build practical confidence in integrating ultrasonography into routine dental care.

Demonstrators: Konstantina Delli & Jaisri Thoppay

Session Logistics:

Participants will be divided to 2 groups to rotate between 2 stations, each dedicated to one of the anatomical structures discussed in the lectures (i.e., major salivary glands and TMJ). Each station will last for approximately 60 minutes before switching to the other station and will have an experienced instructor and appropriate simulation models and/or real patients for hands-on practice.
