Therapeutic Injections in Oral Medicine (Hands-on)
This comprehensive workshop on Therapeutic Injections in Oral Medicine aims to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in administering therapeutic injections for various oral and maxillofacial lesions/conditions. The workshop includes two lectures followed by a hands-on session where participants will practice injection techniques on simulation models and real patients. This hands-on approach ensures that attendees gain confidence and competence in performing these procedures.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the indications for intralesional injections in oral medicine.
- Identify the medications commonly used for intralesional injections.
- Learn the techniques for administering intralesional injections safely & effectively.
- Describe the anatomy/function of the TMJ & understand the indications for intra-joint injections.
- Familiarize with the medications and substances used for TMJ injections.
- Master the technique for performing TMJ intra-joint injections.
- Understand the pathophysiology of myofascial orofacial pain.
- Identify trigger points within the orofacial musculature.
- Learn the techniques for administering trigger-point injections while being aware of potential side effects
Workshop Structure:
- Welcome & Introduction (10 minutes)
- Lecture 1: Intralesional Injections (40 minutes)
- Lecture 2: Trigger-Point Injections for Myofascial Orofacial Pain (20 minutes)
- Hands-on Session- 2 groups rotation (80 minutes: 30-40 minutes for each rotation)
- Wrap-up, Q&A, and reflection (10 minutes)
Course Program:
TIME | TOPICS |
13.30-14.30 | Lecture 1: Intralesional Injections
Synopsis: This lecture will cover the use of intralesional injections in treating various oral lesions. The focus will be on the types & dosage of medications used, indications, contraindications, techniques, and potential complications. |
14.30-15.30 | Lecture 2: Trigger-Point Injections for Myofascial Orofacial Pain
Synopsis: This lecture will explore the role of trigger-point injections in managing myofascial orofacial pain. The session will cover the pathophysiology of myofascial pain, identification of trigger points, and the injection technique. |
14.30-15.00 | Hands-on Session- 2 groups rotation
Participants will be divided to 2 groups to rotate between 2 simulation stations, each dedicated to one of the injection techniques discussed in the lectures. Station 1: Intralesional Injections Station 2: Trigger-Point Injections (participants can bring in patient volunteers to this stations)
Session Description: Participants will be divided to 2 groups to rotate between 2 stations, each dedicated to one of the injection techniques discussed in the lectures. Each station will have an experienced instructor and appropriate simulation models or real patients for hands-on practice.
Station 1: Intralesional Injections Simulation Practice intralesional injection techniques on simulation models (i.e., silicone blocks) mimicking oral lesions. Instructors will guide participants through the proper techniques and safety protocols.
Station 2: Trigger-Point Injections (participants can bring in patient volunteers to this stations) This hands-on portion of the workshop will help participant master examination techniques for masticatory/head/neck muscles to identify trigger points. Afterward, participants will performing accurate and safe trigger point injection technique into the affected muscles. Participants can bring their own patients. Please note that each two participants will work on one patient. |
