How to Write a Compelling Abstract for a Dental Journal
Course Description:
This hands-on workshop is designed to help clinicians, researchers, and students craft impactful abstracts for scientific presentations and journal submissions. Participants will learn the structure of an effective abstract, review real examples, and practice writing and editing their own.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify the essential components of a scientific abstract (background, methods, results, and conclusion).
- Recognize common mistakes in abstract writing and how to avoid them.
- Apply techniques to write clear, concise, and well-structured abstracts suitable for peer-reviewed journals.
- Critically evaluate and revise abstracts for clarity, accuracy, and alignment with journal guidelines.

Prof. Sompop Bencharit
DDS, MS, PhD
Bio:
Dr. Sompop Bencharit is a leading figure in dentistry, serving as Professor, Associate Dean for Innovation, and Chief Innovation Officer at High Point University’s Workman School of Dental Medicine. He previously held prominent roles at MUSC College of Dental Medicine and VCU. He earned his DDS and Diploma in Prosthodontics from Chulalongkorn University and advanced his studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, obtaining a Master’s and PhD in Prosthodontics and Oral Biology. A Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, he is also a Fellow of the ACP, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and International College of Dentists. Dr. Bencharit received the 2021 ACP Distinguished Researcher award and has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles. He holds editorial roles with the Journal of Prosthodontics, PLoS ONE, and Scientific Reports. Additionally, he is involved with the IADR/AADOCR-Prosthodontic Research Group and serves on research committees for the ACP and American Academy of Osseointegration.
