Advances in Dental Laser Therapy: Surgical Lasers and Photobiomodulation (Hands-on)
This workshop will provide a comprehensive introduction to the use of surgical lasers for soft tissue procedures and the application of photobiomodulation (PBM) for managing orofacial lesions and conditions in the dental clinics. The workshop consists of two 30-minute lectures followed by a 120-minute hands-on session where attendees will gain practical experience.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the basic principles of laser technology & identify different types of lasers used in dental practice.
- Learn the clinical indications and contraindications for using lasers in soft tissue procedures.
- Recognize the benefits and limitations of laser-assisted dental surgeries.
- Understand the scientific basis of photobiomodulation.
- Identify clinical conditions that can benefit from PBM therapy by reviewing the evidence supporting its efficacy.
- Learn about the different devices and protocols used in PBM.
- Gain hands-on experience in handling and operating dental lasers while performing soft tissue procedures.
- Understand safety protocols and guidelines for using lasers in dentistry.
- Learn to adjust laser parameters for different clinical scenarios.
- Learn to set up and operate PBM devices correctly.
- Apply PBM therapy to manage conditions such as oral ulcers and TMJ disorders.
- Practice laser safety parameter and protocols.

Speakers:
Prof. Marco Meleti
DDS, PhD
Bio:
Marco Meleti graduated in Dentistry in 2002, at the University of Parma, Italy. He earned his PhD in Oral Sciences at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Pathology of the Free University Medical Center – Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2008).
Currently he is Professor of Oral Surgery at the University of Parma. He is the President of the European Association of Oral Medicine (2023-2025), Vice-president of the Italian Society for Laser in Dentistry (SILO).
His main research topics include innovative approaches in oral surgery, oral oncology, laser in dentistry and salivary diagnostics. Author of 180 peer-reviewed indexed in scopus (h-index: 30).
Dr. Kentaro Ikeda
DDS, MPH, FDS RCSEd
Bio:
Dr. Ikeda is an associate surgeon in the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and serves as the clinical director of the Division. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. He received DDS from Tokyo Dental College, Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the Kanagawa Children’s Medical Center, Certificates in GPR and Oral Medicine from the Carolinas Medical Center, and Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine and holds Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. His clinical and research interests are the management of oral mucosal diseases, orofacial pain, pediatric Oral Medicine, oral manifestations of systemic diseases, drug-induced oral complications, and oral care for medically complex patients. He currently serves as President of American Academy of Oral Medicine.
