Dental Sleep Medicine: Management of Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in the Dental Clinic (Hands-on)
This workshop aims to equip dental professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a dental clinic setting. The session will begin with two didactic lectures covering an overview of snoring and OSA, followed by specific management strategies using mandibular advancement devices (MADs). The hands-on session will provide practical training in assessing patient for suitability for MAD, as well as the preparation, construction, delivery and titration of MADs.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the epidemiology, risk factors, and health implications of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea
- Learn about the various diagnostic tools and criteria used to identify OSA, including polysomnography and home sleep tests.
- Review the medical management options for OSA, including CPAP therapy, surgical interventions, and lifestyle modifications.
- Understand the mechanism of action, indications, and contraindications of mandibular advancement devices in the treatment of snoring and OSA.
- Learn the step-by-step process of records obtaining, fitting and adjusting MADs to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Identify the potential complications and side effects associated with MADs and how to manage them effectively.
- Perform comprehensive oral examinations to assess patients’ suitability for mandibular advancement device therapy.
- Master the techniques for obtaining accurate dental records (scans and bite registrations) to ensure precise fitting of MADs.
- Practice the insertion, adjustment, and titration of mandibular advancement devices, focusing on patient comfort and device efficacy.

Bio:
Dr. Arwa Farag is an Associate Professor and Consultant of Oral Medicine/Orofacial Pain at KAUFD, Jeddah Saudi Arabia. She is also a visiting faculty at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA, USA
Dr. Farag graduated with BDS from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She completed her residency training in Oral Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and earned her Doctor of Medical Science Degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She completed her fellowship in TMD/Orofacial Pain at TUSDM. Dr. Farag is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine, the American Board of Orofacial Pain, and a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh.
