Dr. Jūratė Žekonienė

DDS, MS

 

Bio:

Jūratė Žekonienė has a master’s degree in dentistry (1997) by Medical Academy of Kaunas and a periodontologist license by Vilnius University. She has released multiple research papers and textbooks for Lithuanian students and dentists.

Her research in the area dental hygiene and periodontal disease etiopathogenesis focuses on the use of different approaches to maintain excellent oral health and motivation.

She is a graduate of the dentistry program at the Kaunas Medical Academy (now- Lithuanian University of Health Science), and did the internship and postgraduate education at Vilnius University hospital Zalgirio clinic, where she eventually earned the periodontologist qualification (2000) from Vilnius university. She lives in Vilnius, Lithuania, where she works as a clinical periodontologist.  She is also a lecturer at Vilnius university, involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education mainly focusing on professional oral hygiene, non surgical  periodontal therapy, periodontal examination, disease diagnostics, treatment planning, prognosis. Jūratė is a president of Lithuanian Society of periodontology, member of EFP, and the member of Lithuanian Dental chamber Council. Almost for 10 years Jurate lectures for iTOP in local and international events.

Session Description:

This dynamic round table session will engage clinicians in the real-world challenges of diagnosing and managing oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Through case-based discussions, participants will critically evaluate diagnostic dilemmas, explore emerging adjunctive tools, share insights on optimizing clinical decision-making, and navigate the post-cancer therapy complications. The session encourages interactive dialogue, aiming to bridge the gap between suspicion, confirmation, and action in oral oncology.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Recognize clinical and histopathological hallmarks of OPMDs and OSCC to improve early detection and risk stratification.
  2. Discuss evidence-based approaches for surveillance, AI utilization, intervention, and referrals based on lesion risk profiles and patient-specific factors.
  3. Understand the role of the dentist and oral medicine specialist in the prevention and management of head and neck complications tied to cancer therapy.

09:15 – 10:45 Round Table Discussion (90 minutes) Groups A, B, C will rotate through 3 tables, each group will spend 40 minutes with the expert at each table

  • Each group will be presented with a detailed clinical case(s), including patient history, diagnosis, previous treatments, and response to topical therapy.
  • Guided by the expert/facilitator, participants will discuss the case, evaluate the effectiveness of topical therapy, and consider the criteria for transitioning to systemic therapy.
  • Facilitators will guide the discussion, emphasizing critical decision points and evidence-based recommendations.
  • Each group presents their conclusions and decision-making rationale.

Bio:

Omar Kujan is a Professor and Discipline Lead of Oral Pathology at UWA Dental School. An internationally recognized expert in oral pathology and oncology, he has published over 150 high-impact papers with more than 6000 citations (h-index 40). His pioneering contributions include introducing liquid-based cytology for oral cancer screening, developing a customized Bethesda system for oral brush cytology, and leading the WHO-adopted binary grading system of oral epithelial dysplasia. He co-authored the 2022 WHO Blue Book on Head and Neck Tumours and plays a leading role in the WONDER World Workshop on Oral Medicine. A passionate mentor, he has supervised PhD, DCD, and DMD students to completion.

Prof Kujan’s translational research has driven innovation, including novel diagnostic tools with industry partners and NHMRC-funded projects on high-intensity focused ultrasound. Recognized among Stanford’s top 2% of scientists since 2021, he also advocates for community health through clinics, Telehealth, and active consumer involvement in shaping research.

 

Prof. Asma’a Faden

Bio:

Asma’a Faden is a Professor/Consultant of Oral Medicine at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University with a PhD in Oral Medicine from Eastman Dental Institute- UCL/ University of London. She has a fellowship in Laser Dentistry, from the University of Genoa/UCL Eastman Dental Institute. For over 25 years, Professor Faden has been deeply involved in teaching theoretical and Clinical aspects of Oral Medicine to both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental Students. She has also gained significant administrative experience during this time. A founding member of the Saudi Board of Oral Medicine and Pathology in Saudi Arabia (SBOMP), Professor Faden served as the Program Director at King Saud University. She is also an active member of many National and International Dental Societies and has published several articles in highly respected scientific journals. Recently, she was appointed as the President of the Society for Oral Medicine (SOM).

Artificial Intelligence Shapes the Future: Digital Oral Appliances

 

Session Description:

Oral appliances are a vital therapeutic and supportive modality in dental practice, commonly used in the management of conditions such as temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), bruxism, oral dysesthesia, and desquamative gingivitis. They also serve important roles in occlusal maintenance following orthodontic treatment and as protective guards for athletes. This workshop is designed to equip dental professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the digital design and fabrication of a wide range of oral appliances.

 

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course the participants are able to:

  1. Evaluate current technologies such as intraoral scanners, design software, and 3D printing.
  2. Explain how AI and digital workflows are transforming the design, fabrication, and delivery of mouthguards and retainers.
  3. Discuss clinical cases that demonstrate the benefits and challenges of adopting digital workflows for oral appliances
  4. Perform intraoral scans on typodonts or live models using leading digital scanners.
  5. Utilize AI-powered design software to customize oral appliances for various clinical scenarios.
  6. Interface with lab partners to review STL files, 3D printing options, and delivery protocols.

She currently serves as the CEO of the Center for Integrative Oral Health Inc., Neonotics, where she champions holistic and interdisciplinary approaches to oral healthcare. In addition to her leadership role, she maintains a private practice specializing in Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain Management, and the care of medically complex patients.

Dr. Thoppay has served in academia for over 11years in her career journey where, she contributed significantly to clinical care, research, and education, mentoring students and advancing the field through innovative initiatives. Beyond academia and clinical practice, Dr. Thoppay is a passionate advocate for oral health equity. She actively participates in community outreach, patient-centered focus groups, both online and in person. Dr. Thoppay’s diverse experience, interdisciplinary knowledge, and unwavering dedication to patient care and healthcare transformation make her a respected leader and innovator in the field, and she currently serves as the President of American Academy of Oral Medicine.

 

Dr. Arwa Farag

BDS, DMSc, Dip ABOM, Dip ABOP, FRCSEd.

 

Bio:

Dr. Arwa Farag is an Associate Professor/Consultant of Oral Medicine/Orofacial Pain at KAUFD, Jeddah,KSA. She is also a visiting faculty at Tufts University(TUSDM), Boston,USA. Dr. Farag graduated with BDS from King Saud University, Riyadh,KSA. She completed her training in oral medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and earned her Doctor of Medical Science from Harvard University. She completed her fellowship in TMD/orofacial pain at TUSDM. Dr. Farag is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine, the American Board of Orofacial Pain. She is the current treasurer of the American Academy of Oral Medicine and a steering member of the World Workshop on Oral Medicine. She is a member of the Scientific Council of the Saudi Board of Oral Medicine Training Programs and a founding member of the Saudi Society of Oral Medicine.

Bio:

Dr. Yusuke Hamada is Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor in the Periodontics Section. He serves as a Director at Advanced Education in Periodontics at UCLA. Dr. Hamada is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology (ABP), Oral Board Examiner for the ABP, and ITI fellow.

Dr. Yusuke Hamada graduated from Kyushu Dental University, obtained DDS. He completed his periodontal program at Indiana University School of Dentistry and received MSD and certificate of Periodontics.

He is involved didactic and clinical teaching in both pre-doctoral and graduate levels. He received AAP Foundation Nevins Teaching and Clinical Research Fellowship in 2019 and The Inaugural Excellence in Peer Review in Clinical Advances in Periodontics. He enjoys teaching and conducting basic and clinical research focus on the hard and soft tissue regenerative procedures.
