Advances in Dental Laser Therapy: Surgical Lasers and Photobiomodulation (Hands-on)

This workshop will provide a comprehensive introduction to the use of surgical lasers for soft tissue procedures and the application of photobiomodulation (PBM) for managing orofacial lesions and conditions in the dental clinics. The workshop consists of two 30-minute lectures followed by a 120-minute hands-on session where attendees will gain practical experience.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the basic principles of laser technology & identify different types of lasers used in dental practice.
  • Learn the clinical indications and contraindications for using lasers in soft tissue procedures.
  • Recognize the benefits and limitations of laser-assisted dental surgeries.
  • Understand the scientific basis of photobiomodulation.
  • Identify clinical conditions that can benefit from PBM therapy by reviewing the evidence supporting its efficacy.
  • Learn about the different devices and protocols used in PBM.
  • Gain hands-on experience in handling and operating dental lasers while performing soft tissue procedures.
  • Understand safety protocols and guidelines for using lasers in dentistry.
  • Learn to adjust laser parameters for different clinical scenarios.
  • Learn to set up and operate PBM devices correctly.
  • Apply PBM therapy to manage conditions such as oral ulcers and TMJ disorders.
  • Practice laser safety parameter and protocols.

Participants will rotate between two stations: surgical laser procedures on animal soft tissue and photobiomodulation on patient volunteers

Prof. Marco Meleti

DDS, PhD

Bio:

Marco Meleti graduated in Dentistry in 2002, at the University of Parma, Italy. He earned his PhD in Oral Sciences at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Pathology of the Free University Medical Center – Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2008).

Currently he is Professor of Oral Surgery at the University of Parma.  He is the President of the European Association of Oral Medicine (2023-2025), Vice-president of the Italian Society for Laser in Dentistry (SILO).

His main research topics include innovative approaches in oral surgery, oral oncology, laser in dentistry and salivary diagnostics.  Author of 180 peer-reviewed indexed in scopus (h-index: 30).

 

Dr. Kentaro Ikeda

DDS, MPH, FDS RCSEd

Bio:

Dr. Ikeda is an associate surgeon in the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and serves as the clinical director of the Division. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. He received DDS from Tokyo Dental College, Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the Kanagawa Children’s Medical Center, Certificates in GPR and Oral Medicine from the Carolinas Medical Center, and Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine and holds Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. His clinical and research interests are the management of oral mucosal diseases, orofacial pain, pediatric Oral Medicine, oral manifestations of systemic diseases, drug-induced oral complications, and oral care for medically complex patients. He currently serves as President of American Academy of Oral Medicine.

Dental Sleep Medicine: Management of Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in the Dental Clinic (Hands-on)

This workshop aims to equip dental professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a dental clinic setting. The session will begin with two didactic lectures covering an overview of snoring and OSA, followed by specific management strategies using mandibular advancement devices (MADs). The hands-on session will provide practical training in assessing patient for suitability for MAD, as well as the preparation, construction, delivery and titration of MADs.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the epidemiology, risk factors, and health implications of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea
  • Learn about the various diagnostic tools and criteria used to identify OSA, including polysomnography and home sleep tests.
  • Review the medical management options for OSA, including CPAP therapy, surgical interventions, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Understand the mechanism of action, indications, and contraindications of mandibular advancement devices in the treatment of snoring and OSA.
  • Learn the step-by-step process of records obtaining, fitting and adjusting MADs to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Identify the potential complications and side effects associated with MADs and how to manage them effectively.
  • Perform comprehensive oral examinations to assess patients’ suitability for mandibular advancement device therapy.
  • Master the techniques for obtaining accurate dental records (scans and bite registrations) to ensure precise fitting of MADs.
  • Practice the insertion, adjustment, and titration of mandibular advancement devices, focusing on patient comfort and device efficacy.

Dr. Farag graduated with BDS from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She completed her residency training in Oral Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and earned her Doctor of Medical Science Degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She completed her fellowship in TMD/Orofacial Pain at TUSDM. Dr. Farag is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine, the American Board of Orofacial Pain, and a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh.

Bio:

Prof. Ingrid Różyło-Kalinowska is specialist in radiology and diagnostic imaging, Head of the Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiodiagnostics as well as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medical Dentistry of the Medical University of Lublin, Poland and member of the Senate of the University.  She is the Past President of the European Academy of DentoMaxilloFacial Radiology, Regional Director of International Association of Dentomaxillofacial in Europe, Board Member and the Chairman of the Section of DentoMaxillofacial Radiology of the Polish Dental Association. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the “Journal of Stomatology”, the official journal of the Polish Dental Association. She is author of scientific papers, conference abstracts, keynote lectures, textbooks in English and Polish, PhD supervisor and reviewer in Poland and abroad.

Indications & decision for switching to systemic therapy in Oral Medicine (case-based discussion)

This half-day workshop is designed for oral healthcare professionals involved in the management of orofacial lesions/conditions. The workshop aims to enhance participants’ understanding of when and how to transition from topical to systemic therapy in challenging cases. Attendees will be divided into two groups, each guided by an expert facilitator, to engage in round table discussions. Through the analysis of complex clinical cases, previously treated with topical therapy, participants will develop a deeper insight into the decision-making process for systemic therapy initiation. The interactive format encourages collaborative learning and critical thinking, equipping participants with practical skills for their clinical practice.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify key clinical indicators & patient factors that necessitate the transition from topical to systemic therapy.
  • Make informed & timely decisions regarding the initiation of systemic therapy considering evidencebased guidelines and contemporary research recommendations.
  • Be aware of the systemic therapy side effects & the precautionary measure that should be taken into consideration.

Bio:

Dr. Treister is Chief of the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Clinical Director of Oral Medicine and Oral Oncology at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Treister earned his DMD from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine and subsequently completed his Oral Medicine and Oral Biology training at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he is an Associate Professor of Oral Medicine in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity. He is board certified in Oral Medicine and practices at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, with special interest in oral mucosal diseases.

 

Dr. Vidya Sankar

DMD, MHS, RCSEd

Bio:

Dr. Sankar received her DMD, completed a GPR, and served as Staff Dentist in the Infectious Disease Clinic from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She practiced general dentistry in New Jersey prior to earning her Certificate in Oral Medicine from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. She was a recipient of the Sjögren’s Foundation Fellowship, received her Master’s in Health Science degree from Duke University and is certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine (ABOM) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr. Sankar’s is an Associate Professor, Division Director for Oral Medicine, and Program Director for the TUSDM Oral Medicine Residency at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Previous positions include Oral Medicine Clinical Director with tenure at UTHSC San Antonio, Clinic Director Brigham and Women’s Hospital Oral Medicine and Dentistry clinic, Co-Director of the Oral Medicine and Oncology clinic at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She currently Immediate Past-President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine and she serves as Board member and Treasurer for the Sjogren’s Foundation.

 

Prof. Nikolaos Nikitakis

MD, DDS, PhD

Bio:

Professor Nikolaos G. Nikitakis received his DDS and MD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece and his PhD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), USA. He is Diplomate of the ABOMP and Fellow of the AAOMP and AAOM. He has also completed a sabbatical in the School of Dentistry and MD Anderson Cancer Center in the University of Texas, Houston (UTH), USA.

Prof. Nikitakis is currently the Dean, as well as Professor and Chair, Department of Oral Medicine & Pathology and Hospital Dentistry, in the School of Dentistry, NKUA.

He has published over 275 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 200 abstracts, with approximately 3.800 citations and h index: 36 on Scopus and 6.300 citations and h index: 46 on Google Scholar. He is author of a textbook in Contemporary Oral Medicine and Pathology and of several chapters in other textbooks and handbooks. He serves in the Editorial Board of various scientific journals.

Bio:

Dr. Uzer Celik graduated from Faculty of Dentistry, Ankara University in 2001. She received a PhD degree in Restorative Dentistry from Ege University in 2007. She has a diverse experience in dental education by giving many theoretical and practical courses in Suleyman Demirel University and Izmir Katip Celebi University. She received the “Associate Professor” title in 2012 and “Professor” title in 2018. She served in various administrative positions at different universities, including Vice Dean of Faculty of Dentistry, Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Erasmus Coordinator and Farabi Coordinator.

Her research interests include esthetic dentistry, composite restorations, caries risk assessment, adhesion, clinical trials and digital dentistry. She has authored or co-authored many peer-reviewed publications, and has given many presentations at national or international specific meetings. She is a member of International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and Turkish Association of Restorative Dentistry.
