Course Objectives:

  • Formulate clear, answerable clinical questions using the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) framework to facilitate effective literature searches.
  • Critically appraise scientific studies by evaluating the study design, methods, analyses, and overall validity of the evidence.
  • Apply an evidence-based approach to integrate current best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences in order to make well-informed treatment decisions.

 

Course Program:

09:00 – 10.00 Introduction of the scientific knowledge, essential for dental professionals to develop skills in evidence-based practice
10.00 – 11.30 Interactive workshop discussion on the principles and methods of evidence-based dentistry (EBD). Participants will learn how to formulate clear clinical questions using the PICO framework
11.30 – 12.00 Critical appraisal techniques to evaluate the validity and applicability of research findings
12.00 – 12.30 Insights into interpreting significance and weighing different levels of evidence

Prof. Vineet Dhar

BDS, MDS, PhD, FAAPD, FDSRCS (Eng), FICD, FACD

 

Bio:

Dr. Dhar is a clinical professor and chair of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry and assistant dean of postgraduate and professional studies at University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He currently serves as the Director of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). He also serves the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) as Member of the Editorial Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the Evidence-Based Dentistry Committee, and as a Consultant of the Council on Scientific Affairs. In addition, Dr. Dhar serves the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) as the Chair of Science Committee. He works on incorporating evidence-based dentistry in education and patient care and serves on AAPD, IAPD, and ADA expert panels to create evidence-based clinical recommendations.

Solve the Mystery: Clinical Cases Challenge

This round table discussion offers a unique and interactive learning experience designed for oral healthcare professionals eager to hone their diagnostic skills. Attendees will be divided into two groups, each guided by an expert facilitator, to engage in solving challenging clinical cases, simulating real-world oral medicine mysteries. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate, share insights, and apply critical thinking to diagnose complex scenarios. Through dynamic group interactions and expert guidance, attendees will deepen their understanding of diagnostic processes, improve problem-solving skills via proposing management modalities.

Course Objectives:

  • Analyze clinical data & formulate differential diagnoses through the discussion of complex clinical cases.
  • Discuss the diagnostic processes leading to the final diagnoses.
  • Incorporate evidence-based practices to formulate clinical decisions regarding appropriate management modalities.

 

Course Program:

TIME TOPICS
13:30 – 14:00 Introduction about the importance to hone diagnostic skills
14:00 – 17:30 Round Table Discussion (90 minutes)- Groups A, B, C will rotate through 3 tables, each group will spend 30 minutes at each table

  • Each group will be presented with a detailed clinical case(s), including patient history, symptoms, and initial test results.
  • Facilitated by the experts, participants will discuss the case(s), ask questions, & work together to develop a differential diagnosis.
  • Facilitators will guide the discussion, providing insights and prompting critical thinking to arrive to the final diagnosis.
  • Each group will formulate clinical decisions regarding appropriate management modalities & presents their rationale.

Speakers:

Prof. Marco Meleti

DDS, PhD

Bio:

Marco Meleti graduated in Dentistry in 2002, at the University of Parma, Italy. He earned his PhD in Oral Sciences at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Pathology of the Free University Medical Center – Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2008).

Currently he is Professor of Oral Surgery at the University of Parma.  He is the President of the European Association of Oral Medicine (2023-2025), Vice-president of the Italian Society for Laser in Dentistry (SILO).

His main research topics include innovative approaches in oral surgery, oral oncology, laser in dentistry and salivary diagnostics.  Author of 180 peer-reviewed indexed in scopus (h-index: 30).

 

Dr. Vidya Sankar

DMD, MHS, RCSEd

Bio:

Dr. Sankar received her DMD, completed a GPR, and served as Staff Dentist in the Infectious Disease Clinic from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She practiced general dentistry in New Jersey prior to earning her Certificate in Oral Medicine from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. She was a recipient of the Sjögren’s Foundation Fellowship, received her Master’s in Health Science degree from Duke University and is certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine (ABOM) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr. Sankar’s is an Associate Professor, Division Director for Oral Medicine, and Program Director for the TUSDM Oral Medicine Residency at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Previous positions include Oral Medicine Clinical Director with tenure at UTHSC San Antonio, Clinic Director Brigham and Women’s Hospital Oral Medicine and Dentistry clinic, Co-Director of the Oral Medicine and Oncology clinic at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She currently Immediate Past-President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine and she serves as Board member and Treasurer for the Sjogren’s Foundation.

 

Prof. Nikolaos Nikitakis

MD, DDS, PhD

Bio:

Professor Nikolaos G. Nikitakis received his DDS and MD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece and his PhD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), USA. He is Diplomate of the ABOMP and Fellow of the AAOMP and AAOM. He has also completed a sabbatical in the School of Dentistry and MD Anderson Cancer Center in the University of Texas, Houston (UTH), USA.

Prof. Nikitakis is currently the Dean, as well as Professor and Chair, Department of Oral Medicine & Pathology and Hospital Dentistry, in the School of Dentistry, NKUA.

He has published over 275 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 200 abstracts, with approximately 3.800 citations and h index: 36 on Scopus and 6.300 citations and h index: 46 on Google Scholar. He is author of a textbook in Contemporary Oral Medicine and Pathology and of several chapters in other textbooks and handbooks. He serves in the Editorial Board of various scientific journals.

  • Understand the flipped classroom model and its application in dental education for digital complete denture fabrication.
  • Develop proficiency in digital workflows and CAD software for designing and fabricating complete dentures.
  • Foster student-led learning initiatives that enhance collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving in prosthodontics.

 

Course Program:

13.30 -14.30 How to take a more active role in their learning process. This session highlights how student-led projects in digital complete denture fabrication foster creativity, critical thinking, and hands-on experience with digital tools.
14.30- 15.30 Incorporating computer-aided design (CAD) software and digital workflows, students engage in designing, fabricating, and problem-solving real-world denture cases.
15.30-16.30 Understanding the flipped classroom model which encourages students to lead discussions, present case studies, and collaborate with peers, while faculty act as facilitators and mentors.
16.30-17.30 Knowing how this educational strategy bridges the gap between traditional teaching methods and the digital innovation required in modern prosthodontics. The session showcases the benefits of experiential learning, promoting self-directed study, teamwork, and competency in digital denture technology.

Prof. Sompop Bencharit

DDS, MS, PhD

 

Bio:

Dr. Sompop Bencharit is a leading figure in dentistry, serving as Professor, Associate Dean for Innovation, and Chief Innovation Officer at High Point University’s Workman School of Dental Medicine. He previously held prominent roles at MUSC College of Dental Medicine and VCU. He earned his DDS and Diploma in Prosthodontics from Chulalongkorn University and advanced his studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, obtaining a Master’s and PhD in Prosthodontics and Oral Biology. A Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, he is also a Fellow of the ACP, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and International College of Dentists. Dr. Bencharit received the 2021 ACP Distinguished Researcher award and has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles. He holds editorial roles with the Journal of Prosthodontics, PLoS ONE, and Scientific Reports. Additionally, he is involved with the IADR/AADOCR-Prosthodontic Research Group and serves on research committees for the ACP and American Academy of Osseointegration.

Dr. Brian J. Goodacre received his DDS degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 2013. He completed a four-and-a-half-year combined program in Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 2017, earning an MSD degree. He is a board-certified prosthodontist and the director of clinical technologies for Nobel Biocare North America.  Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry providing lectures to both dental and graduate students.

This comprehensive workshop on Therapeutic Injections in Oral Medicine aims to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in administering therapeutic injections for various oral and maxillofacial lesions/conditions. The workshop includes two lectures followed by a hands-on session where participants will practice injection techniques on simulation models and real patients. This hands-on approach ensures that attendees gain confidence and competence in performing these procedures.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the indications for intralesional injections in oral medicine.
  • Identify the medications commonly used for intralesional injections.
  • Learn the techniques for administering intralesional injections safely & effectively.
  • Understand the pathophysiology of myofascial orofacial pain.
  • Identify trigger points within the orofacial musculature.
  • Learn the techniques for administering trigger-point injections while being aware of potential side effects

 

Workshop Structure:

  • Welcome & Introduction (10 minutes)
  • Lecture 1: Intralesional Injections (40 minutes)
  • Lecture 2: Trigger-Point Injections for Myofascial Orofacial Pain (20 minutes)
  • Hands-on Session- 2 groups rotation (80 minutes: 30-40 minutes for each rotation)

13.30-14.30 Lecture 1: Intralesional Injections

Synopsis:

This lecture will cover the use of intralesional injections in treating various oral lesions. The focus will be on the types & dosage of medications used, indications, contraindications, techniques, and potential complications.

14.30-15.30 Lecture 2: Trigger-Point Injections for Myofascial Orofacial Pain

Synopsis:

This lecture will explore the role of trigger-point injections in managing myofascial orofacial pain. The session will cover the pathophysiology of myofascial pain, identification of trigger points, and the injection technique.

14.30-15.00 Hands-on Session- 2 groups rotation

Participants will be divided to 2 groups to rotate between 2 simulation stations, each dedicated to one of the injection techniques discussed in the lectures.

Station 1: Intralesional Injections

Station 2: Trigger-Point Injections (participants can bring in patient volunteers to this stations)

 

Session Description:

Participants will be divided to 2 groups to rotate between 2 stations, each dedicated to one of the injection techniques discussed in the lectures. Each station will have an experienced instructor and appropriate simulation models or real patients for hands-on practice.

 

Station 1: Intralesional Injections Simulation

Practice intralesional injection techniques on simulation models (i.e., silicone blocks) mimicking oral lesions. Instructors will guide participants through the proper techniques and safety protocols.

 

Station 2: Trigger-Point Injections (participants can bring in patient volunteers to this stations)

This hands-on portion of the workshop will help participant master examination techniques for masticatory/head/neck muscles to identify trigger points. Afterward, participants will performing accurate and safe trigger point injection technique into the affected muscles. Participants can bring their own patients. Please note that each two participants will work on one patient.

Bio:

Dr. Ikeda is an associate surgeon in the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and serves as the clinical director of the Division. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. He received DDS from Tokyo Dental College, Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the Kanagawa Children’s Medical Center, Certificates in GPR and Oral Medicine from the Carolinas Medical Center, and Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine and holds Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. His clinical and research interests are the management of oral mucosal diseases, orofacial pain, pediatric Oral Medicine, oral manifestations of systemic diseases, drug-induced oral complications, and oral care for medically complex patients. He currently serves as President of American Academy of Oral Medicine.

Dr. Nathaniel Simon Treister

DMD, DMSc

 

Bio:

Dr. Treister is Chief of the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Clinical Director of Oral Medicine and Oral Oncology at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Treister earned his DMD from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine and subsequently completed his Oral Medicine and Oral Biology training at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he is an Associate Professor of Oral Medicine in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity. He is board certified in Oral Medicine and practices at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, with special interest in oral mucosal diseases,

Dr. Arwa Farag is an Associate Professor and Consultant of Oral Medicine/Orofacial Pain at KAUFD, Jeddah Saudi Arabia. She is also a visiting faculty at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA, USA

Dr. Farag graduated with BDS from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She completed her residency training in Oral Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and earned her Doctor of Medical Science Degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She completed her fellowship in TMD/Orofacial Pain at TUSDM. Dr. Farag is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine, the American Board of Orofacial Pain, and a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh.
