Periodontal Mucogingival Surgery – Diagnostics and Root Coverage (Hands-on)

Course Objectives:

  • Learning about periodontal plastic surgery, focusing on surgical interventions aimed at correcting or eliminating developmental or traumatic anatomical deformities of the gingiva or alveolar mucosa.
  • Discussion on the diagnostic processes for identifying mucogingival issues, with emphasis on strategies for root coverage.
  • Learning surgical techniques for managing mild to extensive, simple, or multiple mucogingival lesions around teeth and implants.
  • Hands-on training training, where participants practice selected periodontal plastic surgery techniques under expert guidance
  • Presentation and analysis of a clinical case study involving mucogingival surgery.

 

Course Program:

09:00 – 09:30 Introduction: Understanding Periodontal Plastic Surgery

  • Brief overview of periodontal plastic surgery, focusing on surgical interventions aimed at correcting or eliminating developmental or traumatic anatomical deformities of the gingiva or alveolar mucosa.
  • Definition and significance of gingival recession, including its common occurrence and impact across different populations and age groups.
09:30 – 10:30 Diagnostics and Root Coverage Strategies

  • Focused discussion on the diagnostic processes for identifying mucogingival issues, with emphasis on strategies for root coverage.
  • Analysis of the contributing factors to gingival recession, including mechanical causes and the predisposition associated with the “thin phenotype” due to anatomical characteristics.
10:30 – 12:30 Surgical Indications and Techniques

  • Review of the indications for surgical intervention in cases of mucogingival lesions and deformities.
  • Overview of surgical techniques for managing mild to extensive, simple, or multiple mucogingival lesions around teeth and implants.
12:30 – 15:30 Practical Session: Hands-On Training and Live Surgery Demonstration

  • Hands-on training session where participants practice selected periodontal plastic surgery techniques under expert guidance.
  • Live surgical demonstration to illustrate real-time application of techniques for treating mucogingival lesions and gingival recession, with explanations of each step.
15:30 – 17:00 Case Study Review and Discussion

  • Presentation and analysis of a clinical case study involving mucogingival surgery.
  • Discussion of treatment planning, surgical approaches, and outcomes, with participant engagement
17:00 – 17:30 Conclusion and Q&A

  • Summarization of key points covered during the session.
  • Open Q&A session for participants to ask questions, share insights, and discuss any challenges encountered in clinical practice

Speaker:

Prof. Andrea Pilloni

MD, DDS, MS

 

Bio:

Prof. Andrea Pilloni is a distinguished and highly regarded expert in periodontology, particularly known for his pioneering work in periodontal regeneration using hyaluronic acid (HA). He serves as the head of the Section of Periodontology at Sapienza University of Rome and is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of Periodontology. Prof. Pilloni’s research and contributions have made significant impacts in the field of dental science and periodontal therapies.

Prof. Pilloni earned his MD and DDS degrees from the University of Rome, Tor Vergata. He further specialized with a Master of Science in Oral Biology and a Postgraduate Certificate in Periodontics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). During his tenure at UCLA, he worked as an assistant researcher in the Dental Anatomy and Oral Biology Department, focusing on the role of HA in bone formation. His groundbreaking research at UCLA demonstrated a seven-fold increase in bone formation with different molecular weights of HA, marking a significant advancement in the field of osteogenesis
